INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler volleyball team celebrated Homecoming 2009 with a 3-0 sweep over Alabama A&M Saturday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. On a day when BU's football team won with one second on the clock, Bulldog volleyball didn't see such a dramatic finish.
Senior Porshia Allen and junior Jessica Wolfe each had 11 kills and 12 digs, while junior Katie Daprile had a match-high 16 digs.
After a slow start, Butler raced out to a 12-6 lead in the first set. The Bulldogs would lead by as much as 24-9 before cruising in the first set 25-11.
The Bulldogs of Alabama A&M put up a valiant fight in the second set, closing to within 16-15 on a kill by Lydia Adeosun. Butler (13-8) battled back for a 20-17 lead and forced AAM to call timeout. After another timeout at 23-20, BU finished the second set with an ace off the right hand of Wolfe.
Butler would start relatively slow in the third set as well before going on a big run and putting the visiting Bulldogs away. Up 13-11, BU ran off five straight points with Daprile serving to take an 18-11 advantage. The lead grew to 23-15 before AAM (5-10) rallied for a few points. BU took the third set 25-20, finishing the sweep with an Allen kill.
Butler returns to Horizon League action this week with the quirky part of the schedule. BU plays twice midweek, hosting Milwaukee Tuesday, Oct. 6 and Green Bay the next night. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse and will both be streamed live on ButlerSports.com.
