ROCK HILL, S.C. - Butler hit .333 as a team and junior Jessica Wolfe had a double-double as the Bulldog volleyball team dominated Appalachian State, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Winthrop's Hilton Garden Inn Invitational. BU concludes play in the tourney Saturday night against host Winthrop.
Wolfe had 15 kills, 11 digs and six block assists to lead BU. Junior Kelsey Labrum had nine kills on just 13 attacks while senior Porshia Allen added seven kills. Freshman setter Gina Vera handed out 36 assists and junior Katie Daprile had a team-high 13 digs.
"This was a great win. We were definitely in sync," head coach Sharon Clark said. "Kelsey and Jessica hit well and Porshia did a great all around."
Butler (8-4) jumped on the Mountaineers early in the first set, ripping off a 12-5 lead on its way to a 25-11 win. ASU would pull to within 14-10 at one point, but Butler finished the set with an 11-1 run and won the final nine points of the set.
Like the first set, Butler finished the second stanza with a flurry. ASU battled to take a 15-13 lead, but the Bulldogs ran off 12 straight points to win 25-15. Vera served for 11 straight points during the stretch.
The third set was the most competitive of the match. Butler trailed by one until taking a 16-13 lead with four straight point. After an ASU timeout, the Mountaineers got four straight of their own to take a 17-16 lead. The two teams traded points until Labrum came up with two kills in a key spot to give Butler match point at 24-22. BU would then clinch the set 25-23 on a block by Wolfe and sophomore Maureen Bamiro.
Clark also praised the play of Daprile and fellow junior Brittany Awai.
"Brittany and Katie passed and played defense really well for us," she said.
