YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Senior Porshia Allen had 16 kills and 16 digs junior Jessica Wolfe added 12 kills and nine digs as the Butler volleyball team swept Youngstown State, 3-0, Thursday evening at the Beeghly Center. BU, now 9-5 on the season, improved to 18-0 all-time versus YSU.
Sophomore Maureen Bamiro had 10 kills and controlled the defensive side of the net, picking up three solo blocks and a pair of block assists. Freshman Gina Vera handed out 38 assists to go along with eight digs and junior Katie Daprile posted a match-high 17 digs.
"Porshia and Maureen were great, but everyone really worked hard and stuck to the game plan," head coach Sharon Clark said. "Gina was great with her set selection to all of our hitters. She kept their blockers guessing."
BU controlled all three sets and was never threatened. The Bulldogs never trailed in the first set, and finished it off with an 8-2 run to win 25-16.
Butler never trailed in the second set, putting together a 7-0 run to take a 16-7 lead. BU would build the lead to 21-11 with Allen serving en route to winning the second set 25-17.
The Bulldogs controlled the third set throughout, and took a 20-14 lead. YSU showed signs of life, pulling within 21-19 before BU pulled away 25-20.
YSU's Ruth Boscaljon, an all-league player, finished with 10 kills on .333 hitting to lead the Penguins.
Butler will remain in northeast Ohio for the weekend, playing three matches at Kent State's Mizuno Open Sept. 18-19. The Bulldogs will take on Utah State, Robert Morris and Kent State, respectively.
