MILWAUKEE - Junior Jessica Wolfe had 16 kills and freshman Gina Vera added 32 assists and seven digs as the Butler volleyball team swept Binghamton, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the Marquette Volleyball Invitational. The Bulldogs have one more match today, concluding their weekend Saturday night against Texas State.
Butler (5-3) maintained a slim lead in the first set, keyed by a 5-1 run that gave the Bulldogs a 14-12 advantage. The BU lead extended to 19-14 when a pair of Binghamton attack errors and a kills by junior Jalesa Lee forced a Binghamton timeout. Butler would go on and close the first set 25-21.
The Bulldogs won the second and third sets by identical scores of 25-20. BU built a 14-7 lead in the second set and cruised throughout. The final two clinching points came from sophomore Maureen Bamiro, who had a kill and block to finish the stanza and give the Dogs a 2-0 lead.
The third set was a little different, as Binghamton (2-3) scored the first six points of the set. BU would pull even at 12, but then have to call timeout after three straight Bulldog attack errors gave Binghamton a 17-14 lead. Trailing 19-16, Butler got strong serving from Vera and a pair of blocks from senior Porshia Allen to go on a 6-0 run and take a 22-19 lead. Three straight BU kills would end the match and clinch the sweep.
Allen narrowly missed a double-double with 10 digs and nine kills. Junior Katie Daprile had a strong all-around performance, collecting a season-high 15 digs to go along with six kills. Bamiro added seven kills and two block assists, while junior Brittany Awai had 10 digs.
