Big Runs Give BU 3-0 Win Over Eastern Illinois

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Junior Jessica Wolfe had 13 kills and 11 digs and the Bulldogs held Eastern Illinois to a .137 hitting percentage as the Butler volleyball team swept EIU, 3-0, Saturday morning at the IPFW Volleyball Tournament in Fort Wayne. The Bulldogs, who improve to 2-1 for the season-opening weekend, conclude tourney play against Kent State Saturday at 5 p.m.

"We played with a lot of hustle and were able to put together long stretches of points when we had the ball," head coach Sharon Clark said.

Eastern Illinois (2-1) controlled the early moments of the first set before, taking a 20-17 lead following a BU timeout. The Bulldogs regrouped, however, running off an 8-1 run to win the first set 25-21.

Butler trailed by four several different times before going on another big run, an 11-3 spurt that gave BU a 20-16 lead. Butler then controlled the final moments to win the second set 25-22 and take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Trailing 12-10 in the third set, the Bulldogs ran off seven straight points to take a 17-12 lead. Butler then dominated the rest of the stanza, finishing off EIU 25-17 and claiming the 3-0 sweep.

The Bulldogs hit .274 as a team, exactly double the hitting percentage of the Panthers.

Junior Jalesa Lee hit .321 with 10 kills and freshman Gina Vera handed out 33 assists to go along with eight digs.
