Result: Butler def. Marian 25-15, 25-22, 25-19
INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler volleyball team got a valuable learning experience Tuesday evening in Hinkle Fieldhouse. With 11 different Bulldogs seeing action and gaining playing time, BU picked up its first win of the season in a 3-0 win over crosstown foe Marian.
"It was nice for us to open up at home with a win," head coach Sharon Clark said. "We used a lot of different combinations tonight, and it was good for us to get a lot of different girls some playing time."
Junior Maureen Bamiro and senior Jessica Wolfe (Plainfield) each had 11 kills to lead the Dawgs, with Wolfe adding 13 digs for her third double-double of the season. Freshman Maggie Harbison (Carmel) had a match-high 17 digs. But it was Bamiro who set the tone for the match, both offensively and defensively. The 6-2 junior had six blocks (five block assists), helping the Bulldogs to a 9-2 team blocks advantage.
"I thought Maureen Bamiro played phenomenal tonight," Clark said.
Sophomore Gina Vera had 26 assists and added four block assists.
Butler (1-3) started fast in the first set, gaining a 10-5 lead on a laser-like ace by Wolfe. Marian would close and tie the set at 12, but BU answered with five straight points for a 17-12 lead. Ahead 20-15, BU would win five straight points to close out the first stanza 25-15.
The second set was much closer, with Marian at one point owning a 17-16 lead. Butler answered with a 4-1 run to take a 20-18 advantage. Bamiro closed the set with a pair of kills for a 25-22 Butler win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Butler shook off a slow start to win the third set and clinch the 3-0 victory. Marian (0-2) at one point led 13-10, but the Bulldogs ripped off an 8-1 run behind the serving of Harbison and senior Jalesa Lee and a trio of kills by Bamiro. A Marian attack error would give BU a 20-15 lead and force a Marian timeout. Butler would go on to finish the third set 25-19.
No Knight player had double-digit kills. Holly Wasmund and Katie Kaiser led MU with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Butler will travel to the University of Arizona this weekend to play three matches in UA's Wildcat Classic. BU will play host Arizona Friday, Sept. 3 before playing Cal State Bakersfield and Louisville on Saturday.
