Result: Louisville def. Butler 25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21
TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior Jessica Wolfe had a match-high 22 kills but the Butler volleyball team dropped a close 3-1 match to Louisville Saturday afternoon at Arizona's Wildcat Classic.
Much like the entire match, the first set was close throughout. Tied at 15, Butler went on a 5-0 run to go up 20-15 and appeared to be in control. The Cardinals quickly ripped off a 7-0 run to go ahead 22-20 and force a Butler timeout. Tied at 23, Louisvile won the last two points to take the first set.
U of L jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the second set, but the Dawgs battled back. With Wolfe serving, BU closed to within 19-17, but lost the next three points. Butler called a timeout down 24-19 and won the next point, but Louisville finished the second set 25-20.
With their backs to the wall, Butler jumped all over the Cardinals in the third set. Behind serving by Vera and Wolfe, BU got up 12-6 and eventually 16-10. Later in the set, Wolfe ripped off two straight aces, giving Butler a 23-17 lead and forcing a Louisville timeout. The Cardinals pulled to within 24-22 before serving the ball in the net, clinching the third set for Butler 25-22.
Butler (2-5) was within 14-12 before a 6-3 stretch by Louisville made it 20-15 and forced a Butler timeout. BU got as close as 22-19 before falling 25-21 in the decisive set.
Two players had double-doubles - Lola Arslanbekova (19 kills, 11 digs) and Emily Juhl (15 kills and 16 digs) - to lead Louisville (4-2).
The tournament at Arizona was the second of two road tournaments to open Butler's season. BU will host its own tourney this coming weekend. Butler will play Army and UNC-Wilmington Friday, Sept. 10 and Xavier Saturday, Sept. 11.
