Milwaukee def. Butler 25-17, 25-19, 25-23
INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler volleyball team saw its five-match win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as league-leading Milwaukee swept the Bulldogs 3-0 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Freshman Kelly Kyle had 10 kills and nine digs to lead the Dawgs.
Butler (10-13, 6-5) hit just .138 and couldn't keep up with Milwaukee, which improved to 11-0 in Horizon League play.
"We were not in sync," head coach Sharon Clark said. "Milwaukee is very disciplined and they know their system and they stick to it. They know your weaknesses and they put balls there. But it was a good wake-up call for us. We will bust our tails in the gym this week and we will definitely be better next weekend."
Milwaukee's Kerri Schuh, the 2010 Horizon League Player of the Year, had 16 kills on .375 hitting with 15 digs. The Panthers hit .260 and Kayla Price had 46 asssists.
UWM (18-4) rolled in the first two sets before the Bulldogs put up a good fight in the third. Tied 19-19, the two teams traded points. Senior Maureen Bamiro got a block and junior Gina Vera had a kill to put the Bulldogs ahead 22-20. Milwaukee rallied to win the next three points and regain the lead. The score was 23-23 when the Panthers put the final touches on the day, winning the final two points with a pair of kills.
Butler has two home matches remaining, with Valparaiso and UIC coming to Hinkle Fieldhouse next weekend.
