Butler def. Green Bay 25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 25-13
MILWAUKEE - Senior Maureen Bamiro had 15 kills on 25 attacks and freshman Kelly Kyle had a team-high 17 digs as the Butler volleyball team defeated Green Bay 3-1 in the quarterfinal of the Horizon League Volleyball Championship. The Dawgs will play Cleveland State Saturday in the league semifinal.
Bamiro, an All-Horizon League pick for the second straight year, went 15-0-25 for .600 hitting to lead the Dawgs. Freshman Belle Obert added 10 kills and 10 digs for Butler. Freshman Brooke Ruffolo added 15 digs for the Bulldogs.
"Maureen was unstoppable offensively and our serving-and-pass game was the best it has been this season," head coach Sharon Clark said. "We served tough and were passing well to set up our blockers."
Butler, the tourney No. 3 seed, held No. 6 seed Green Bay to .098 hitting. BU, the top blocking team in the Horizon League regular season, posted 12.0 team blocks to 6.0 for the Phoenix.
All-Horizon League player Brittany Groth had 24 digs for GB and Sabrina Marunowski added 18 digs. Leah Van Zeeland had 18 kills for the Phoenix, who ended the year with an 11-18 record.
The Bulldogs and Vikings split the regular season series this season, with both road teams winning. Butler beat Cleveland State in the league semifinal last year in five sets en route to the league tourney title. The BU-CSU match will be at 6 p.m. ET in Milwaukee (5 p.m. CT).
