Two in-season invitationals and a new and exciting Atlantic 10 schedule highlight the 2012 Butler volleyball schedule. BU will have 13 home matches this season at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Not only will strong teams like Stephen F. Austin, Indiana and Kent State come to Hinkle Fieldhouse, but changing conferences has been an exciting proposition for head coach Sharon Clark and the Bulldogs.
"The team and coaches are extremely eager to embark upon our inaugural season in the Atlantic 10 Conference," Clark said. "Our experience of competing in a strong conference will be a source of strength for us, but this year the location, atmosphere, and teams will all be new, creating an exciting experience that our program is highly anticipating."
Before the conference schedule, BU will host its Butler Classic Sept. 7-8 and then a Butler Invitational Sept. 14-15. The Butler Classic features Western Illinois, Stephen F. Austin and Indiana. The second weekend welcomes Souteast Missouri State, UC-Davis and Kent State.
Butler's first A-10 action is at national and Midwest power Dayton Friday, Sept. 21. BU's first Atlantic 10 home match is Friday, Sept. 28 against George Washington.
"Competing in a conference with multiple teams in the top 75 along with our non-conference opponents only enhances the strength of our schedule and will provide plenty of opportunities for us to become a consistent top 50 program," Clark said. "This has been our program goal and we see the road ahead this year as a new scenery, but same focus."
The end of the season will keep the Bulldogs at home. Butler hosts LaSalle, Temple and Saint Louis over the final two weekends of the regular season. That leads the team into the Atlantic 10 Championship, held Nov. 16-18 at Duquesne.
Butler opens the season with four matches at DePaul Aug. 24-25. The Dawgs then play three matches at Pittsburgh at the end of August.
