CHICAGO - Junior Maggie Harbison smacked 13 kills with seven digs, but the Butler volleyball drop its 2012 season opener 3-1 to Indiana State at DePaul. The Bulldogs play Eastern Illinois and DePaul Saturday in Chicago.
"We committed too many unforced serving and hitting errors," head coach Sharon Clark said. "We struggled to score hitting tonight and simply never got in sync."
Sophomore Jadyn Yarling, who started at libero, led the Bulldogs with 11 digs. Junior setter Morgan Peterson handed out 32 assists and had a team-best seven blocks. Sophomore Erica Stahl had six blocks in her first match in a Butler uniform.
Butler's bright spot of the evening was a 25-17 win in the second set. BU led 10-9 when it scored four straight points to grab some breathing room. At 14-10, BU got three more points to take control of the set. Butler kept pace to win the set handily, clinching the set with a block by senior Rachel Barber and Stahl.
Butler lost the first set 25-23. The Bulldogs were down big before going on a late 5-0 run to make it interesting. ISU then withstood the Butler rally to take the early lead.
Indiana State stayed a step ahead of Butler in the third and fourth sets. In the third set, ISU jumped out to a 9-2 start from which the Dawgs couldn't recover. Butler led 15-8 in the fourth set before Indiana State scored four straight points to pull within 15-12. BU led 17-12 when ISU went on a 6-0 run to lead 18-17. Indiana State then pulled away to clinch the match.
"We will need better results from our block tomorrow and our upperclassmen to lead better," Clark added.
Shea Doran led the Sycamores with 14 kills and six blocks. Molly Murphy added 10 digs and eight kills.
The Bulldogs continue play at DePaul vs. Eastern Illinois Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. ET. The Butler-DePaul match is set for 8 p.m. ET.
