INDIANAPOLIS - After starting the day with a thrilling 3-2 win over SEMO, the Butler volleyball team fell to UC-Davis 3-0 on Friday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
"I thought they won the serve-and-pass-game," head coach Sharon Clark said. "They were clearly the aggressor from start to finish. Although we could play with them early on, we did not fight our way back for each and every point."
The Bulldogs (9-4) never led in the first set, trailing 7-6 early. Soon, the Aggies went on a run and led 14-9 and Butler called timeout. UC-Davis would later own leads of 18-11 and 21-13. With junior Claire Randich serving, Butler was able to get some momentum late in the set. Two blocks and a kill by Obert got BU to 20, but that's where it ended as the Aggies took a 1-0 lead.
The second set was close throughout, and BU led 14-13 after a kill by senior Rachel Barber. The Aggies scored the next four points to lead 17-14. BU got two points to pull within 17-16 and force a timeout. UC-Davis took control the rest of the way, winning 25-19 to lead the match 2-0.
UC-Davis rolled in the third set, racking up 5.0 team blocks in the process. The Aggies quickly led 10-4 and cruised 25-14 to clinch the win.
UC-Davis (6-6) also defeated Kent State earlier in the day in three sets. Alison Whitson led the Aggies with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Butler will finish its week with a match vs. Kent State Saturday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. ET.
