INDIANAPOLIS - Xavier hit .301 as a team and had two players with 16 kills each to beat the Butler volleyball team on Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Junior Claire Randich led Butler in kills and blocks.
Randich totaled 11 kills on .455 hitting and tied the team high with three blocks. Junior Morgan Peterson hit .692 (9-0-13) and had several kills with an athletic flair. Sophomore Brooke Ruffolo had a team-best 17 digs, including nine in the first set.
Alex Smith and Sarah Brown each smacked 16 kills, with Smith putting up a 16-0-25 line. But it was Xavier's execution and ability to close out point on long rallies that put the Musketeers on top.
"We could not finish and close out points that we really needed to," head coach Sharon Clark said. "There were a lot of great rallies on both sides, but they got more of those points than we did."
Xavier (14-9, 6-2) ran a slide on offense that Butler couldn't contain. Other than brief moments in the second and third sets, the Musketeers never trailed.
"They started the match running their slide and we didn't do a good job shutting it down," Clark said. "That gave them a lot of momentum. They ran their slide really well tonight."
In the loss, Clark lauded the play of Randich and Peterson. The two players combined for 20 kills and just one attack error.
"Morgan and Claire played wonderfully. They did a great job," Clark said. "Morgan did a great job getting balls to Claire and Claire finished."
Butler (12-10, 2-6) will play 18th-ranked Dayton Sunday, Oct. 21 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The match is set for a noon start.
