No. 18 Dayton Edges Butler 3-1
INDIANAPOLIS - Sophomore Brooke Ruffolo led BU with 21 digs but the Butler volleyball team couldn't hold leads as the 18th-ranked Dayton Flyers won 3-1 at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Bulldogs hung with the league-leading Flyers all afternoon. Butler held sizable leads in the first two sets and was very close to having a 2-0 match lead. In the first set, the Bulldogs led UD 22-16 before Dayton exploded for a 10-2 run to steal the set. The first set featured 11 ties and two lead changes.
"It was a competitive match. The girls played hard and left it all out there," head coach Sharon Clark said. "We had opportunities to close it out early in the match and didn't do it, but the girls fought all the way to the end. I'm proud of them for that."
Butler bounced back to win the second set 25-22. The Flyers (17-4, 9-0) would go on and control the second half of the match, winning 25-20 and 25-22.
"Belle had been struggling a bit lately so it was nice to see her in full force," Clark said. "And Brooke Ruffolo dug some incredible balls for us and that was great to see."
Dayton's Rachel Krabacher, the 2011 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, had 23 kills, 12 digs and four blocks to lead the Flyers.
Butler (12-11, 2-7) will play at Fordham and at Rhode Island Oct. 26-27. Three home matches remain, against La Salle, Temple and Saint Louis.
