INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The volleyball team will host IUPUI in the 2013 home opener just days after sweeping the competition in the Cincinnati Invitational. Action inside the Hinkle Fieldhouse will start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
The Bulldogs are off to a great start to the 2013 season with a perfect 3-0 record heading into the home opener. Butler defeated Cincinnati and Morehead State on Friday before taking down Tennessee on Saturday in the Cincinnati Invitational. The team swept Cincinnati and Tennessee, but it took four sets to defeat the Eagles.
Belle Obert was an impact player for Butler over the weekend as she now leads the team with 32 kills (3.20 kills per set). The junior has 21 digs, 16, blocks and two service aces to her credit.
The Butler defense was great during opening weekend as the team recorded 35.5 blocks compared to just seven from their opponents. Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Erica Stahl is currently leading the team with 16 blocks.
The Jaguars hosted the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational this past weekend, playing matches against Illinois State, VCU and Florida Gulf Coast. The Jags lost the first two games in five sets, but came back with a strong effort vs. Florida Gulf Coast in the final game taking a 3-0 win.
Moriah Fair and Kaitlyn Hickey led the Jaguar offense over the weekend with 53 and 45 kills respectively. Alexis Meeks set up her teammates with 131 assists and the combination of Meeks and Fair led the team by each recording four service aces.
It was a total team effort defensively for IUPUI as four different players recorded over 25 digs. Beth Howard is the team leader at 54, and Hickey is second on the team at 35. Meeks recorded 30 digs and Fair was close behind at 29.
The Bulldogs hold a 24-12 lead over IUPUI in the all-time series. These two teams most recently played in 2012 with Butler taking a 3-2 win at IUPUI.
The Butler Classic served as the home opener in 2012 as the Bulldogs hosted Western Illinois, Stephen F. Austin and Indiana. The Bulldogs won two out of three in the classic taking a 3-1 win in the home opener over Western Illinois and a 3-1 win vs. Indiana.
Obert Named MVP
Junior Belle Obert was recognized as the MVP of the Cincinnati Invitational for her outstanding play in all three games. Obert was in mid-season form in the season opener as she recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs in the opening match at Cincinnati. There wasn't much drop off in performance in the second match vs. Morehead State as Obert recorded a team-high 11 kills to go with seven digs and six blocks. In the final match of the weekend, Obert recorded 11 more kills and five more blocks against Tennessee.
Morgan Peterson and Claire Randich were named to the Cincinnati Invitational All-Tournament Team. Peterson averaged 9.40 assists per set giving her 94 through the first 10 sets of the season. She added 17 kills and two service aces.
Randich is now second on the team with 24 kills and tied for the team lead in service aces with three. She was one of three Bulldogs to reach a double figure block total.
A Look Ahead
Butler will travel to Arizona to participate in the Arizona Classic from Sept. 6-7. The Bulldogs will play host school Arizona in the first match on Sept. 6 and end the classic with two games on Sept. 7 starting with Utah Valley State at 3:30 and finishing with Eastern Kentucky at 7:30.
