TUCSON, Ariz. – Butler improved to 5-1 on the regular season with a 3-0 win over Utah Valley in day two of the Arizona Classic. The Bulldogs dominated sets one and three on their way to winning their fifth match of the season. The Arizona Classic will end later today as the Bulldogs face Eastern Kentucky at 7:30.
Belle Obert once again sparked the Butler offense leading the team with 11 kills. Stephanie Kranda and Mary Striedl impacted the match with eight kills each and the defense was once again a factor as the Bulldogs recorded 11 blocks compared to just six for the Wolverines.
Butler owned the first match using multiple runs to earn a 25-11 win. The most competitive set of the afternoon came in set two as the two teams were knotted up at 18-18. A 3-0 Butler run gave the Bulldogs a cushion that they were able to ride to a 25-22 win. Attack errors hurt Utah Valley in crunch time as Butler took a 2-0 edge into the break.
The third set also belonged to Butler as the team opened up a 15-10 lead midway through the final set. The 'Dogs were the first team to 20 as Obert pounded a kill into the court off the Morgan Peterson assist. Striedl got the Bulldogs to match point and Kranda ended the match as the Bulldogs snap back after their first loss of the season yesterday.
Peterson recorded 31 assists and eight digs for Butler and the duo of Striedl and Brooke Ruffolo picked up the defensive end with 11 digs each.
Butler hit .500 in the first set to earn the lopsided win and they fought off Utah Valley in the second by hitting .171. The offense clicked in the third and final set as Butler hit .333 compared to just .059 from the Wolverines.
