Senior Keely Norris' 10 kills helped give the Butler volleyball team a 30-21, 30-22, 30-26 victory over Austin Peay in the first match of Saint Louis University's Billiken Classic on Friday (Aug. 30) at the Baumam-Eberhardt Center.
In game one, Amanda Matthew's seven straight service points pushed a 13-11 Butler (1-0) lead into a 20-11 advantage. Norris fueled the Bulldogs' attack in the game, with six kills while hitting a blazing .625 (6-1-8).
Matthews again proved to be key from the service line, serving six consecutive points in game two to help the Bulldogs build a 14-10 lead. Butler held onto the lead throughout the rest of the game, as the squad closed out the win 30-22.
Game three featured a much tighter contest, with nine ties and six lead changes. Norris' kill broke a 24-24 tie and added a match-ending kill to seal the 30-26 triumph.
Freshmen Carolyn Gruesbeck and Megan Knightly added nine kills each to the Bulldogs totals, while sophomore libero Kamy Peters paced the defense with 18 digs. Matthews led all players with 35 assists.
The Lady Govs, who hit .080 on the match, were led by Sarah Schramka's nine-kill, 12-dig output.
