Indianapolis, Ind. - Sophomore outside hitters Kelsey Labrum and Jessica Wolfe combined for 29 kills and 25 digs in notching a pair of double-doubles and the Bulldogs rebounded from a tough opening-set defeat to score a 15-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-22 win over Indiana State on Tuesday (Sept. 9) evening at Hinkle Fielhouse.
Butler (7-1) scored its sixth-straight victory with the win while sending the Sycamores to 4-6 on the season.
The Bulldogs found themselves on the short-end through one set after ISU hit .370 while holding Butler to just .059 en route to a 25-15 triumph.
The set must have served as a wake-up call for Butler, which came out swinging in the second frame to the tune of a .433 percentage (16-3-30) while limiting the Sycamores to a mere .042 mark (6-5-24) in bringing the match back to even at 1-1.
The Butler defense took over following the break, as ISU hit -.237 (6-15-38) while totaling only 12 points. Maureen Bamiro posted four block assists and Porshia Allen added three, as the Bulldogs combined for 12 in the set alone to make up for only seven kills.
The offense returned in the fourth set, however, as Butler knocked down 19 kills and held off a late charge by the Sycamores to claim the match.
Labrum finished with a season-high 19 kills and added 13 digs for her second double-double of the year, while Wolfe chipped in 10 kills and 12 digs for her second. Allen, who also tallied double-figure kills with 10, and Bamiro each notched match-highs with seven block assists each.
Butler's 13 total blocks was just 0.5 blocks shy of tying the year's top mark.
The Bulldogs hit the road this weekend when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y., for the Buffalo Ramada Invitational. Butler opens up with matches against Maryland-Eastern Shore and Maine on Friday (Sept. 12) before closing the tournament against the host Bulls on Saturday (Sept. 13).
