Kali Carter and Krystal Hendrix led the Bulldogs to a 2-1 finish in the Butler Invitational with All-Tournament Team performances for the host school. San Francisco claimed the team championship, going 3-0 behind Tournament MVP Brittanie Budinger. The Bulldogs improve to 8-4 after the weekend action.
Carter's 12 kills paced the Bulldogs in the evening match against Appalachian State. Candice Washington added ten kills of her own on .333 (10-3-21) hitting, which led the team. Sara Gallagher and Megan Knightly had 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
After opening the match with a 30-24 win, the Bulldogs quickly pulled away from the Mountaineers (2-7) in the second game. Butler led 18-6 after senior Halston Campagna rattled off ten consecutive points on serve. The Bulldogs prevailed in the second game by a 30-15 margin. Appalachian State rebounded in the third game, fighting the Bulldogs back and forth. Down 28-23 late in the third game, the Mountaineers won six of the next seven points to tie the match at 29, before a Carter kill and a Mountaineer error game the Bulldogs the game and the match, 31-29.
Kali Rumberger, Appalachian State's representative on the All-Tournament Team, led the Mountaineers with 13 kills and eight digs. Katherine Dean had the only double-double of the night with 10 kills and 10 digs.
The Bulldogs return to action at home Tuesday night against the Dayton Flyers. The first serve is at 7 p.m.
