Valparaiso, Ind. - Butler hit .304 with 17 kills and held host Valparaiso to .000 hitting in claiming a win in the third game, but an early 0-2 deficit would be too much for the Bulldogs to overcome as the Crusaders claimed a 30-19, 30-26, 19-30, 30-22 victory at the Athletics-Recreation Center on Friday (Oct. 19) evening.
Valpo controlled play at the start, hitting .514 (20 kills, 1 error, 37 attempts) in the first game en route to a 30-19 decision. The Bulldogs came back to battle in the second contest, forcing a deadlock at 25-25 before the Crusaders finished on a 5-1 run to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Butler came out swinging after the break, running ahead to a 10-4 lead early on. The Crusaders battled back to bring the match close at 13-12, but the Bulldogs would pull away again with an 11-3 run before sealing a 30-19 decision with a convincing 6-0, game-ending trek.
The comeback would end there, however, as Valpo opened up a 9-1 lead in the fourth game and held on down the stretch.
The Bulldogs posted a commanding 12-3 edge over the Crusaders in total blocks, but Valpo finished with 20 more kills (69 to 49) and added 17 more digs (96 to 79).
Sophomore Porshia Allen posted her ninth double-double of the year with 12 kills and 13 digs while adding a team-high seven blocks. Senior Michelle DeGeeter also finished with double-figure kills (10), while freshman Jalesa Lee hit a team-best .500 in the match (7 kills, 1 error, 12 attempts).
Butler opens up a season-ending six-match home stand on Sunday (Oct. 21) when they host non-league foe UMKC beginning at 1:00 p.m.
