Stephen Lisgo, who earned All-America honors as a junior on the
Butler track and field squad this past spring, has been selected to
the 52-member Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the
European Athletics Under-23 Championships. The international
competition will take place July 16-19 in Kaunas, Lithuania.
Lisgo earned his spot on the UK Athletics team by winning Great
Britain's AAA U23 Steeplechase title on Saturday, June
27. He ran the race in Great Britain just 24 hours after
wrapping up a summer school course at Butler and departing
Indianapolis.
Lisgo joined Butler's track and cross country teams in
2008-09. He earned All-America honors at the 2009 NCAA
Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Fayetteville, Ark., by
placing third in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase in a
Butler-record time of 8:35.49. His time broke the previous
Butler mark of 8:42.5 set by Mark Tucker in 2002.
Lisgo's national meet finish was the best by a Butler athlete
since 2005, when Victoria Mitchell won the women's
steeplechase, and the best by a male Butler athlete in nearly seven
decades!
A native of Mansfield, U.K., Lisgo won the steeplechase at the 2009
Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship in a
league-record 8:51.49. He also placed fourth at the league
meet in the men's 1,500 meter run in 3:56.07, finishing
behind three Butler teammates. He went on to place third in
the steeplechase at the NCAA Mideast Regional and earn an automatic
bid to the NCAA national meet. He earned 2009 Horizon League
Outdoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year recognition.
