GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Butler volleyball
team finished its week-long swing of road matches Sunday with a 3-2
win at Green Bay. The Bulldogs won three of the four road contests
and are now 7-1 in league play, keeping pace for first place in the
Horizon League standings.
Butler (12-7, 7-1 HL) rallied for three straight sets after
starting the match down 2-0. Senior Jessica
Wolfe posted 23 kills and 18 digs to lead the Bulldogs. Junior
Maureen
Bamiro added 19 kills and seven blocks. Senior Katie
Daprile had 29 digs and sophomore Gina Vera dished
out 57 assists.
"Jessie, Maureen and Katie all stepped up huge for us," head
coach Sharon Clark said.
After falling behind, the Bulldogs found their game in the third
set. Butler started fast in the set, and a Wolfe kill would give BU
a 12-8 lead. Leading 14-13, Butler won four straight points to go
up 18-13. The Dawgs would lead the rest of the way, winning the
third set 25-22.
"The fatigue factor was huge, being on the road for our fourth
match," Clark said. "But the team fought through it and stuck
together for a tough win.
"Green Bay came out on fire, playing at home. It's nearly
impossible to win three of four on the road in a six-day span."
An early 4-0 run in the fourth set gave BU a 6-4 lead and forced
a Green Bay timeout. The Bulldog lead would grow to 13-7 after a
Wolfe kill and a pair of Phoenix attack errors. Butler would
maintain a sizable lead throughout and win the set 25-19, tying the
match 2-2.
BU took command in the fifth set, grabbing a lead of 6-2.
Eventually, Butler would lead 11-6. Green Bay won the next three
points, but the Bulldogs regrouped and finished the comeback
victory on a 4-1 run.
The Bulldogs, winners of three straight and eight of their last
nine, return home to Hinkle Fieldhouse Friday, Oct. 15 vs.
Valparaiso at 7 p.m. Loyola comes to Hinkle the next evening. BU
has already defeated those two teams earlier this season.
