INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler women's
volleyball team began the second half of its Horizon League season
like much of the first half, defeating Valparaiso 3-0 Friday
evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Junior Maureen
Bamiro led the league-leading Bulldogs with 14 kills on .500
hitting.
Butler, which has now won nine of its last 10, is 8-1 in the
league and 13-7 overall.
"We have been working hard on being aggressive but also cutting
down on our errors," head coach Sharon Clark said. "The girls
stepped up and played well, and our crowd was phenomenal."
Senior Jessica
Wolfe, this week's Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week,
smacked 12 kills and freshman Maggie
Harbison had 19 digs (6.33 per set).
BU rolled in the first, sprinting out to a 20-9 lead en route to
a 25-14 win. Valparaiso got no closer than 21-13. Bamiro had five
kills in the set.
The second set was a little closer, but the Dawgs still
maintained control throughout. BU led 12-7 early, and Valpo would
close to within 17-13 but get no closer. Butler won the next four
points to lead 21-13 and would cruise 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead into
the break.
The Bulldogs would roll in the third, leading 6-0 to take the
air out of Valpo's attack. The Crusaders (16-5, 5-4) would close to
within 14-13 at one point, but the Dawgs bounced back. A hard kill
by Wolfe would be the clincher in the 25-19 set.
Sophomore Gina Vera handed
out 41 assists (13.67 per set) to help the Dawgs to a .307 hitting
performance. Valparaiso hit just. 157, and no Crusader had more
than seven kills.
Butler will host Loyola Saturday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. Fans
attending Butler football's game vs. Dayton can attend volleyball
for free with their game ticket.
NOTES: Katie
Daprile, who broke the school record for career digs last week,
before the match was presented a game ball by Butler Athletics
Director Barry Collier marking the record...Butler volleyball
hosted Sisters in Sport before the match, and the event drew a
steady crowd of women's athletics enthusiasts.
