INDIANAPOLIS - A young Butler women's soccer squad defeated Cleveland State 1-0 Sunday afternoon, finishing an improbable run to the Horizon League regular season championship. The Bulldogs finish with a 6-2 league record and will host the Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship.

With the win and Milwaukee's 1-0 loss at Wright State, Butler and UWM each finish 6-2. Butler owns the tie-breaker due to beating Milwaukee 1-0 back on Oct. 10.

"With a group this young, you're going to have some ups and down. We just focused on 'Stay The Course'," head coach Tari St. John said. "We don't get too down after a loss or too high after a win. I'm really proud of these kids." 

Senior Sarah Phelps scored the game-winning goal, burying a penalty kick in the 56th minute. Butler was awarded the PK when a defender took down sophomore Katie Griswold in the box. Phelps nailed the PK and the Bulldogs made the goal stand.

"I'm proud of Sarah for playing and scoring the game-winner," St. John said. "We are all behind her and appreciate her."

Butler had a 7-3 shots advantage and an 8-2 corner kicks advantage. CSU had just one shot on goal. Freshman Jackie Hafele had a match-high three shots, all on goal.

As the No. 1 seed, Butler (8-10, 6-2) will host the Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship Nov. 5-7 at the Butler Bowl. The Dawgs will play the winner of the Wright State/Loyola match in the tourney semifinal.
