DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Linebacker Jordan Ridley sparked a strong
defensive effort and back-up quarterback Matt
Kobli scored a pair of touchdowns to lead visiting Butler
to a 24-8 victory over Davidson in a Pioneer Football League game
on Saturday, Oct. 9. The victory, Butler's first in
four trips to Davidson's Richardson Stadium, snapped the
Bulldogs' two-game losing skid.
Ridley recorded 10 tackles and led a Butler defense that came
within a minute of posting the Bulldogs' first shutout since
1998. It was the fifth straight game of 10 or more stops for
the PFL's leading tackler. Butler limited Davidson
(1-4, 1-2 PFL) to just 185 total yards and blanked the Wildcats
until a final minute, 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback
Jonathan Carkhuff to Lanny Funsten.
Kobli, sharing time with starting quarterback Andrew Huck, rushed
for 62 yards on 10 attempts. He gave Butler the lead with a
one-yard touchdown run with 9:07 left in the second quarter, and
then scored the Bulldogs' final touchdown on a 21-yard run
with 1:46 left in the game. The senior also completed four of
six passes for 31 yards.
Opportune defense led to Butler's first score.
Cornerback Jack McKenna picked off a Carkhuff pass at the Butler
25-yard line and returned it 11 yards. From there, Huck
engineered a 64-yard drive in 10 plays, with Kobli getting the
final carry.
The Bulldogs (3-3, 1-2 PFL) made it 10-0 at halftime on a 28-yard
field goal by David Lang, his fifth of the season.
Lang's kick followed a 10-play, 59-yard drive that included a
21-yard Huck to Carter Walley pass and a 19-yard rush by the Butler
quarterback.
Huck made it 17-0 less than five minutes into the third quarter
with a four-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Jordan Koopman,
capping a nine-play, 58-yard drive. That scoring drive
followed a successful on-sides kick by the Bulldogs to open the
second half.
Butler's final score followed an eight-play, 52-yard
drive.
The Bulldogs rolled up 375 yards in total offense, including 205
yards on the ground. Huck wound up completing 14 of 20 passes
for 139 yards, and he added 43 rushing yards on eight
carries. Koopman finished with seven receptions for 82
yards.
Butler limited the Wildcats to just 113 total yards until the
final drive of the game. Carkhuff, who was sacked three times
in the game, marched Davidson 72 yards in five plays for the
closing score.
The Bulldogs will return home for back-to-back games, beginning
with a test against Dayton on Saturday, Oct. 16.
