BOX SCORE
INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Ben Sippola buried a
penalty kick in overtime to lead the No. 12 Butler men's soccer
team to a 2-1 victory over UIC. The Bulldogs remain the lone
undefeated, untied team in NCAA Division I.
The penalty kick was set up when the Bulldogs made a defensive
stop and countered with a 3-on-1 breakaway. Sippola had the ball in
the center and fed left to freshman Austin Oldham, who maneuvered
into the box. He was taken down by a UIC defender, setting up the
PK for Butler. Sippola's shot deflected off Flames goalkeeper Steve
Purdy and rolled into the net for the game-winner.
The goal was Sippola's team-leading sixth of the season.
"There was no question it was a penalty, we put ourselves in a
good position and made the play," head coach Kelly Findley said.
"I'm really happy for our seniors. They all stepped up. Ben making
the shot, Brett Heinz making a great, game-saving tackle and Conner
Burt was making plays."
The Bulldogs (10-0-0, 4-0 HL) controlled most of the ball,
owning a sizable 19-4 advantage in shots. BU put 10 shots on goal
to just two for UIC. Purdy was busy all day, making eight
saves.
"We probably controlled play. But UIC is always a tough
opponent, as is every team in the Horizon League. There are quality
players at every spot on the field."
Butler took a 1-0 lead at 11:48 when sophomore Jordan Burt fired
a rocket from about 30 yards out into the upper left 90. It was his
first goal of the season.
The Flames (3-7-0, 1-3 HL) answered in the 40th minute when
Derek Huffman scored from the left side, about 10 yards out.
Sippola had a match-high four shots, two shots on goal. Senior
Kyle Pateros and freshman Ade Oluyedun each had three shots. Fabian
Knopfler played all 99:27 in goal, making one save.
Butler, which has been climbing in the national rankings all
season, will host Bowling Green Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. at the
Butler Bowl.
