INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler senior Ben Sippola was named Player
of the Year, junior Matt Hedges was chosen
Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Kelly Findley was
selected Coach of the Year on the 2010 Horizon League Men's
Soccer All-League Team, released on Monday, Nov. 8. The
league-champion Bulldogs had eight total players honored on the
All-League team.
Sippola, who leads the unbeaten Bulldogs (15-0-2) in scoring, also
was chosen both Offensive Player of the Year and first team
All-League in the voting by league coaches. He currently
leads the league in assists (9), while ranking second in total
points (23). The Butler midfielder ranks ninth in the NCAA
Division I in total assists and 11th in assists per game
(0.53). He's scored a career-best seven goals.
Hedges was named Defensive Player of the Year and first team
All-League for the second consecutive season. The Butler
defender helped the Bulldogs lead the league and rank fourth in the
nation in goals against average (0.45). The Bulldogs lead the
league in fewest goals allowed (8) and shutouts (8). Hedges
also contributed four game-winning goals in 2010.
Findley was chosen Coach of the Year for the second consecutive
year. He led the Bulldogs to their first unbeaten regular
season record, a second consecutive Horizon League regular season
championship and a #6 ranking in the NSCAA national poll,
Butler's highest ranking ever! Over the past two
seasons, Findley has guided Butler to a 29-3-4 record.
Named second team All-League from Butler were senior midfielder
Kyle Pateros, senior defender Conner Burt, senior goalkeeper Fabian
Knopfler and freshman midfielder Adekunle Oluyedun. Burt and
Knopfler each earned second team honors for the second straight
year, while Pateros was named second team for the second time in
three years. Knopfler currently leads the league in goals
against average (0.48) and shutouts (8).
Oluyedun, Butler's second-leading scorer with five goals and
four assists, also earned a spot on the league's All-Newcomer
squad, where he was joined by teammates Austin Oldham and Jordan
Burt. Oldham stands fifth on the team in scoring with four
goals and two assists, while Jordan Burt has added a goal and an
assist.
Cleveland State goalkeeper Brad Stuver was named the 2010 Horizon
League Goalkeeper of the Year, while Detroit forward Ya Ya Toure
was picked as league Newcomer of the Year.
Butler will host the semifinals and finals of the 2010 Horizon
League Men's Soccer Championship, beginning on Friday, Nov.
12, at noon. Butler will play the second match on Friday,
starting at 2:30 p.m. The league championship match is
scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m.
