BOX SCORE
INDIANAPOLIS - Junior Maureen
Bamiro led the Bulldogs with match highs of 16 kills
and seven blocks as the Butler volleyball team blanked IUPUI, 3-0,
Tuesday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. BU volleyball has now won five
of its last six matches.
Despite a slow start, the Bulldogs were able to keep their
crosstown opponent Jaguars at bay. The Bulldogs won each set 25-21,
as each team trade points until Butler would ultimately pull away.
The first set was tied at 20 when BU went on a 5-1 run to close the
first set.
The second set was close early before BU built a 20-13 lead on
two straight kills by senior Susan
Lester. Butler would get the next two points to go up
22-13 before IUPUI went on a run. The Jaguars closed to within
24-21 before a Bamiro kill clinched the set and gave Butler a 2-0
match lead.
Playing a variety of different combinations, Butler would roll
in the third and final set. The Dawgs led 13-11 when they ran off
nine straight points behind the serving of freshman Maggie
Harbison. Up 22-12 after Harbison's service run, BU
would close out the set five points later. A kill by senior
Jessica
Wolfe ended the match.
"We had some success with our quick attack, hitting quickly,"
head coach Sharon Clark told reporters after the
match. "They really couldn't stop Maureen (Bamiro), and we wanted
to attack quickly."
Sophomore Gina
Vera had a strong outing, dishing 35 assists with 10
digs and three block assists. Wolfe added seven kills and Harbison
had six. Senior Katie
Daprile posted 15 digs.
Butler (7-6) resumes Horizon League play this Friday vs. Wright
State. The Bulldogs seem to be coming together after playing a very
tough early-season schedule.
"I think we're playing well," Clark said. "We are hitting and
passing well and our chemistry is good. We intentionally scheduled
tough early, and that has helped us prepare. I like where we are
right now."
