BOX SCORE
INDIANAPOLIS - Sophomore Katie Griswold scored the game-winner in the 25th minute and the
Bulldog defense made it stand in a 1-0 victory over Wright State
Sunday afternoon. It was the Horizon League opener for both
teams.
The goal came on a corner kick at the 24:16 mark. Senior
Sarah Phelps sent the corner into traffic and
Griswold shot a header into the net. It was her team-leading sixth
goal of the season. Goalkeeper Olivia Walter and
the Butler defense made the goal stand and made the Bulldogs 1-0 in
league play.
"I've seen our team make an investment and play like that before
and not get the result," head coach Tari St. John
said. "It is nice to play well and get the result we want. "
Butler also had a dangerous try late in the match, and appeared
to have scored an insurance goal. Griswold beat the Wright State
defense and sent a shot that hit the crossbar and cross the goal
line. However, it was not ruled a goal and play
continued.
The Bulldogs had advantages in shots (13-11), shots on goal
(6-5) and corner kicks (5-2). Griswold led BU with four shots, two
on goal. Freshman Nikki Hafele added two shots.
Walter made five saves in goal.
Butler (3-7-0, 1-0 HL) will play IUPUI Wednesday, Sept. 29 at
Kuntz Stadium. The Dawgs' next home contest is Sunday, Oct. 3 vs.
Valparaiso.
