BLOOMINGTON, IND. -- Butler opened the 2012 portion of its indoor track schedule with several strong performances, particularly in the distance events. The two-day meet at Indiana's Gladstein Field House wrapped up on Saturday, Jan. 21.
The women's mile invitational had a definite Butler flavor. Junior Kirsty Legg was the top collegiate finisher in the race, placing runner-up in 4:40.86. She was closely followed by teammate Katie Clark in third place in 4:45.99. Butler freshman Mara Olson came in fifth in 4:50.36. The race was won by Butler assistant coach Mason Cathey in 4:40.72.
The Bulldogs also were well-represented in the men's 3,000 invitational. Freshman Tom Curr came in 12th in 8:13.47, while teammate Ross Clark finished 13th in 8:13.52. Callum Hawkins placed 18th in 8:23.52. Former Butler runners Kris Gauson (3rd, 8:01.40), Rob Mullett (11th, 8:12.55) and Andrew Sherman (14th, 8:14.42) also placed in the competition.
Butler's lone win at the multi-team meet was delivered by sophomore James Martin, who won the men's 5,000 in 14:49.47. The Bulldogs also picked up a sixth place finish in triple jump and an 11th place finish in the long jump from freshman Nicole Hudec. Hudec leaped 36-04.25 in the triple jump and then broke her own school record in the long jump by a quarter of an inch with a jump of 17-05.25.
Junior Lauren McKillop turned in a 12th place finish in the women's 3,000 invitational in 10:00.37, while teammate Becky Howarth finished 13th in 10:03.52.
Freshman Harry Ellis came in 10th in the men's mile invitational in 4:17.08, while teammate Craig Jordan was 11th in 4:28.44. Ellis also came in sixth in the men's 800 in 1:54.93, while Jordan finished eighth in 1:56.18.
