BLOOMINGTON, IND. -- One record effort, one near-record performance and a strong one-two punch in the women's 3,000 meter run highlighted a strong two-day performance by the Butler track and field squad at the Indiana Relays. The non-scoring meet at Indiana's Gladstein Field House wrapped up on Saturday, Jan. 28.
Freshman Nicole Hudec continued her record-breaking season, breaking her own school mark in the long jump. The first year jumper leaped 17-07 to top her previous school record of 17-05.25. Hudec also had a jump of 36-03.50 in the triple jump, narrowly missing her own school mark of 36-06.
Freshman Tom Curr just missed a school record, while placing fourth in the men's 800 invitational. Curr finished the race in 1:51.10, just shy of the school record 1:51.07 clocking set by Kris Gauson in 2009.
Juniors Katie Clark (above right) and Kirsty Legg gave Butler a strong showing in the women's 3,000 meter invitational. Clark finished second in the race in 9:22.17, while Legg was just a shade back in third, posting a time of 9:23.12. Junior Lauren McKillop placed eighth in the same event in 10:00.61.
The Butler women's team also had strong performances from freshman Mara Olson, who finished eighth in the women's 800 meter invitational in 2:13.87, and senior Becky Howarth, who came in eighth in the women's 5,000 meter invitational in 17:24.54.
Butler's men picked up strong showings in a pair of distance events. Sophomore James Martin finished tenth in the men's 3,000 meter invitational in 8:32.62, while sophomores Ross Clarke and Craig Jordan placed tenth and 11th, respectively in the men's mile invitational. Clarke posted a time of 4:07.09, while Jordan finished in 4:08.61. Former Butler runner Kris Gauson finished second in the race with a time of 3:59.95.
Sophomore Nigel Spears posted an eighth place finish in the men's long jump with a leap of 21-10.
