Maccagnone's Golden Goal A Winner

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Freshman Sophia Maccagnone scored in the 108th minute to lift the Butler women's soccer team to a 1-0 double-overtime win at Charlotte on Sunday. It was her team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Maccagnone found the net from 18 yards out, giving Butler the key Atlantic 10 road win. The victory put BU in the top half of the bracket for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship, which will be held at Rhode Island.

"This was another gutsy performance on the road. I am so happy for and proud of this team," head coach Tari St. John said. "Sophie has proven to be one of the best players in the league. She has been the difference so many times for us."

The Bulldogs put eight of their six shots on goal. Charlotte totaled 18 shots, but put just two on target. Julie Burton played all 108 minutes, recording her fifth shutout of the season.

The win gave St. John an 11th victory, tying her career best as a head coach. She coached the Bulldogs to 11 wins in 2008. The Butler coach lauded the play of Mary Allen, Ali Backscheider and Caroline Kowal.

"Mary and Ali were making runs on the counter-attack that gave us opportunities and relieved pressure on our backs," St. John said. "And 'Chip' Kowal gave us some important minutes off the bench today."

BU (11-4-4, 5-1-3) will play in next week's conference tournament Thursday, Nov. 1. Dayton, a team Butler has already defeated this year, is the defending champion.
