INDIANAPOLIS - Junior Daress McClung had 21 points and 12 rebounds and the Butler women's basketball team claimed a 59-56 win over Indiana on Sunday. The Bulldogs led by 21 in the first half before holding on for the win.

"I thought our kids really came out ready to play," head coach Beth Couture said. "I'm proud of them. It's a great win for us. It definitely helps when we can pull one out like that."

At one point leading 37-16, the day appeared to belong to Butler. The Bulldogs sliced through Indiana's defense and built a big lead in the opening 10 minutes. BU led 22-12 and then went on a 10-0 run to take command of the game. Butler led 40-25 at halftime.

"We really executed our offense in the first half. We've been working really hard at it," Couture said. "What's happening now is that we're looking for the first option but not seeing the second option. Our players have been picking up on it."

Indiana played a zone defense and sent the ball into the post to make a comeback. The visiting Hoosiers trimmed Butler's lead to 44-38 when Sasha Chaplin hit a jumper with 12:29 remaining. Butler pushed the lead back to 50-40 on a jumper by Hannah Douglas.

Indiana fought back and cut the lead to 52-46 when freshman Blaire Langlois sank a 3-pointer with 4:07 left to put the Bulldogs back up nine points. IU answered with a 7-0 run to pull within 55-53, but Butler made the winning plays late.

Couture credited junior Mandy McDivitt and her defense. McDivitt held Aulani Sinclair, Indiana's leading scorer, to four points and six turnovers.

"The reason Indiana only had 25 points in the first half was Mandy did a nice job defensively," Couture said. "Sinclair has at least three inches on her. Mandy did a terrific job defending her. Indiana ended up with 56 points, but they would've gotten a lot more had she scored her average."

Sophomore Amanda Raker tied her career high with 12 points, 10 of which came in Butler's excellent first half. Sophomore Taylor Schippers finished with 11 points, six assists and three steals. Schippers made two foul shots with 30 seconds left to put the Bulldogs up 59-53.

Jasmine McGhee led Indiana with 18 points. Linda Rubene added 13.

Butler (4-5) will play next Sunday at Northern Kentucky.
