Homers Lead Butler In 13-5 Win

Box Score

MARTIN, Tenn. - Junior Jimmy Risi homered twice and drove in five runs to lead the Butler baseball team to a 13-5 victory at UT-Martin on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs hit four home runs on the day and six BU players had a multi-hit day as the Bulldogs' bats came alive in the finale of a three-game series in Tennessee.

Risi, Butler's first baseman, hit a two-run homer to right in the 3rd inning and a three-run shot in the top of the 6th. He finished the day 2-for-6 with two runs and five RBIs.

Butler got production up and down the lineup after being limited to six runs in the previous four games. A trio of juniors - Lucas Calderon, Radley Haddad and Jack Dillon - each three hits on the day. Dillon had two doubles and scored twice. Calderon finished 3-for-4 with a homer, walk and two RBIs. He even had a sac bunt on the day.

The Bulldogs (2-5) scored more than enough runs to support right-handed starter Billy Laing. The 6-6 Laing struck out seven over 5.0 innings and allowed three runs. Butler led 6-3 when he exited the ball game. Juniors Jared Earle and Chase Byerly each pitched a scoreless inning. Byerly struck out three batters in the bottom of the 9th.

Leading 1-0 in the top of the 3rd, the Dawgs got a pair of homers to expand their lead. After a Calderon single, Risi homered to make it 3-0. Haddad followed with a double and then sophomore Ryan Wojciechowski hit a two-run homer to center to put Butler ahead 5-0.

The Skyhawks pulled to within 5-3 when Dillon doubled and scored in the top of the 5th. Risi's homer in the 6th inning made it a 9-4 Butler lead. Calderon's two-run homer to center and a pair of doubles keyed Butler's four-run inning in the 9th.

Nine different pitchers took the mound for UTM (3-5). Three gave up multiple runs as Butler pounded out 18 hits (8 for extra bases) on the afternoon.

Butler will go back to Tennessee next weekend for a three-game series at Belmont. The Bulldogs will be in Nashville March 3-4.
