Bulldogs Rout Bellarmine

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler baseball team scored 10 runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 12-5 win over Bellarmine at Bulldog Park on Tuesday. Junior Jimmy Risi homered and drove in four runs and sophomore Marco Caponi went 3-for-4 to lead the Bulldogs.

Risi clubbed a three-run home run - his team-leading sixth of the year - in the 1st inning off Bellarmine starter Nate Grayson. A couple of errors by the Knights and doubles by Pat Gelwicks and Bob Akin led to a seven-run 2nd inning to give Butler a 10-0 lead.

Risi added a sac fly in the big 2nd inning and then took the rest of the day off. Caponi smacked three singles and scored two runs.

Bellarmine, which actually had two more hits than Butler, was led by Phillip Leopold's 3-for-5 effort. Leopold hit a solo homer in the top of the 3rd and scored three runs. Kal Scheler also had three hits.

The Tuesday contest was added to Butler's schedule about a week ago. The game pitted longtime former Butler assistant Matt Tyner against the Bulldogs. Tyner was hired as the head coach at Bellarmine last spring.

Senior Mike Hernandez was credited with the win. He struck out three over 3.0 innings and was the only Bulldog pitcher to work more than one inning.

Butler (13-12) resumes league play at Youngstown State this weekend. The Penguins are in last in the Horizon League standings.
