Belmont Wins Rubber Game Over Butler

Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - After a doubleheader split on Saturday, the Butler baseball team dropped an 8-2 contest at Belmont Sunday in the series finale. Sophomore infielder Marco Caponi led Butler with a 3-for-4 effort.

Belmont used a pair of two-run home runs to break the game open and pull past the Bulldogs. Drew Turner homered in the bottom of the 2nd inning and Zac Mitchell hit a two-run shot in the 6th to key the Bruins. With Belmont leading 2-0, a pair of doubles in the bottom of the 3rd keyed a three-run inning that made the lead 5-0.

Caponi singled and scored on an RBI groundout by junior Lucas Calderon in the top of the 3rd. Belmont led 8-1 in the late innings when BU scored its second run. Junior Pat Gelwicks, Butler's leading hitter after 10 games, singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 8th.

Lefty Kevin Lenkman started on the mound for Butler and struck out six. Jordan Goldschmidt was effective over 3.0 innings of work, making just one mistake on the homer by Mitchell.

BU will play at home Tuesday, March 6 vs. Dayton. First pitch at Bulldog Park is at 3 p.m. ET. The game can be heard HERE.
