Bulldogs Fall 1-0 at DePaul

Box Score

CHICAGO, Ill. – Butler outshot DePaul 18-6 on Thursday afternoon, but the final outcome didn't reflect the stat line as the Blue Demons handed the Bulldogs a 1-0 road loss. Elise Wyatt scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute off an assist from Nina Kodros.

"We were a bit unfortunate today," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John said. "I thought we were the dominant team in many capacities. The shot column is an obvious one, but I thought we had the lion's share of possession and won the physical battle."

Butler (9-5-2, 2-4 BIG EAST) and DePaul (10-2-2, 4-1-1 BIG EAST) went into halftime tied at 0-0. Elise Kotsakis highlighted the first 45 minutes for Butler taking two shots on goal, but Alejandria Godinez continued to play at a high level for DePaul making three stops in the opening half.

The Bulldogs outshot DePaul 11-4 in the second half, but the deciding factor was the score from Wyatt off the Kodros assist. Wyatt now has six goals on the year.

"Goal scoring is vital and DePaul did better than us in that capacity, and there is nothing unfair about the result," St. John added.

Butler had three great scoring chances on Thursday with Serina Kashimoto hitting the post in the first half and Kotsakis drilled the crossbar midway through the second half.

It seemed as if the Bulldogs had tied the match in the second half with goal from McKenzie Muchow, but the goal didn't stand. Stephanie Kaylor took a free kick and found Kelly Mahoney on a header attempt. Muchow got a toe on the ball, but the goal was waved off to give DePaul their sixth shutout of the season.

Kotsakis and Sophia Maccagnone each took five shots against DePaul. Kotsakis forced Godinez into making two saves, but none Maccognone's five attempts were on goal. Muchow was also active with four shots against the Blue Demons.

With the loss, Butler now trails DePaul in the all-time series 2-1. Butler won the first matchup back in 2008 by the final score of 2-1, but DePaul has now won two-straight as they won the previous meeting 2-0 in 2009.

Butler will return to action with a home match against Xavier at the Butler Bowl on Sunday, Oct. 20. The match will be the regular season home finale as the Bulldogs finish BIG EAST play with games at Creighton and Marquette. Senior day announcements for Mary Allen, Ali Backscheider, Julie Burton, Olivia Colosimo, Katie Griswold, and Anna Ventimiglia will begin 15 minutes before the match on Sunday. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

"Xavier has been on the verge of some really good results and are capable of beating anyone," St. John stated. "We will need to prepare for a battle."
