Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Butler erased a 14 point deficit to get within three points of Indiana State late in the second half, but the charge would come up short as the Sycamores held on for a 62-56 victory. A desperation 3-point field goal from Anna Munn put the game out of reach with eight seconds to play.
Ijeoma Uchendu stepped up for Butler with her second-straight solid outing as the junior finished the game with a team-high 12 points and four rebounds. The scoring combo of Uchendu and Taylor Schippers got Butler back into the game as Schippers scored all 11 of her points in the final 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs were without their leading scorer and rebounder as Daress McClung (foot) sat out of Saturday's game to get healthy for the BIG EAST opener. Head Coach Beth Couture did get Liz Stratman back in the lineup after missing the past two games, but foul trouble limited the center to just 12 minutes of playing time. Stratman ended the game with six points on 3-of-7 shooting.
Blaire Langlois and Ashton Feldhaus dialed in from long distance for Butler against Indiana State. Langlois led the team with three 3-point bombs and Feldhaus also came off the bench with two from long range.
Rounding out the scoring for Butler was Mandy McDivitt and Haley Howard who each had four points and Lexus Murry who added two.
Indiana State had three players reach a double figure scoring total with Anna Munn leading the way with 13. She hit three 3-point field goals with her last shot of the day being the most important as she hit from distance to seal the win.
Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir put together an all-around game with 12 points, eight assists and four steals while the tandem of Marina Laramie and Racheal Mahan dominated the glass hauling down a combined 25 rebounds.
The Bulldogs scored the first two points of the game, but they seemed to come out of the locker room flat as ISU used a 9-0 run to get the early advantage. An 8-0 run midway through the half would put the score at 21-9 at the under 12 media timeout. Stratman scored in the paint to end the run, but the damage had been done as ISU led 42-28 at halftime.
Another slow start would hurt the Bulldogs to start the second half as the team went without a field goal until the 13:21 mark when Schippers busted a 3-pointer for her first points of the game. It was Uchendu who then took over as the forward knifed through the interior defense to score eight-straight Bulldog points.
The back and forth scoring from Schippers and Uchendu got Butler back within single digits as the Sycamores really began to feel the pressure after a Langlois 3-pointer got the team within seven at 55-48 with 5:13 to play.
Schippers continued to attack the ISU defense as it was her free throw shooting that got Butler within three points (57-54) with less than a minute to go. Indiana State called a timeout in attempt to slow down the Butler momentum, but the Bulldogs broke the huddle with a trap defense that pushed the ball back near the half court line. Munn went to get the ball with just seconds remaining on the shot clock and she fired a desperation shot that happened to fall as Butler fell behind by six points.
Schippers hit a layup on BU's next possession, but it was too late as Indiana State went on to record their fourth win of the season. With the loss, Butler falls to 5-6 on the year.
The team will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 28 when they host the Marquette Golden Eagles in the BIG EAST home opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
