Bulldogs Fall At Campbell

Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Quarterback Dakota Wolf ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more to lead host Campbell to a 28-9 victory over Butler at Barker-Lane Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 11.  The loss dropped the two-time defending champ Bulldogs to 3-3 on the year and 1-2 in the Pioneer Football League.

Wolfe completed a school-record 34 passes, including touchdown throws of 50 yards to Jared Joyner and six yards to Dalton Dillon.  He ran for a touchdown from 18 yards out in the first half and added a 14-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.  The Campbell signal caller finished with 306 passing yards and a team-high 43 rushing yards.

The league-leading Camels (3-3, 3-0 PFL) took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on Wolf's first touchdown pass and never relinquished the advantage.  Butler trailed 14-9 at halftime, and Campbell padded its margin with a pair of second-half touchdowns.

Butler played nearly the entire game without starting quarterback Matt Shiltz and All-PFL offensive lineman David Tiwari, both of whom were injured in the first quarter.  In their absence, the Bulldogs were limited to a season-low 218 yards, including just 50 yards in the second half.

The Bulldogs cut Campbell's early lead to 7-3 on a career-long 49-yard field goal by Jon Treloar just ten seconds into the second quarter and then answered the Camels' second touchdown with four-yard touchdown run by Rico Watson just before halftime.  The missed extra point left Butler trailing by five points at halftime.

That's as close as the Bulldogs would get.

Butler drove into Campbell territory on its first possession of the third quarter, but stalled and was forced to punt.  Wolf answered by engineering a 13-play, 76-yard drive to push the margin to 21-9.

The Bulldogs' best second-half scoring opportunity came early in the fourth quarter when a blocked punt led to a first down at the Campbell 22-yard line.  Quarterback Malcolm Weaver hit wide receiver Daniel Cotter with a 17-yard pass on first down, but the Camels' defense tightened and held Butler on four plays from inside the five-yard line.

Weaver, seeing the most extensive action of his young career, completed 14 of 29 passes for 166 yards.  Eight of those throws went to his former high school teammate, Marquese Martin-Hayes, for 59 yards.  Senior Derek O'Connor caught three passes for 70 yards.

Senior JoJo Ciancio led Butler's defense with a career-high 14 tackles, including six solo stops, while redshirt freshman Jacob Balder added a career-high 11 tackles.  Safety Zach LaRoche came up with a fumble recovery for the Bulldogs, and sophomore Justin Crull recorded his first pass interception of the season.

The schedule doesn't get easier for the defending PFL champs.  Next up for the Bulldogs is a game against PFL preseason favorite San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 18.  Kickoff for that game at the Butler Bowl will be at noon (ET).
