Bulldogs Drop BIG EAST Match at Georgetown 4-2

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Goals by Sophia Maccagnone and McKenzie Muchow were not enough as Butler fell to Georgetown by the final score of 4-2 on Thursday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The two sides went back and forth for 90 minutes in a gripping match that saw two penalty kicks and a hat trick. Grace Damaska netted the hat trick for the Hoyas with teammate Daphne Corboz earning assists on all three goals, along with scoring a goal of her own.

Maccagnone scored her third goal of the season for the Bulldogs off a penalty kick for the match's first goal. Muchow's second goal of the season was able to draw the match even in the second half.

"Today was a good test for us, especially for our young players," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John explained. "To come on the road and play a team with Georgetown's quality is always a challenge. We wanted to come here with an attacking mindset and try and establish ourselves early in the game. Our players did a great job in that regard which showed a lot of bravery and confidence in the way we want to play the game."

Stephanie Kaylor was tripped in the box during the 18th minute of play which set up Maccagnone for the penalty kick opportunity. Maccagnone put the shot in the lower left corner of the goal while Georgetown goalkeeper Emma Newins dove right to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

In the 26th minute, Shannon McDevitt went for a tackle in the box but was called for a penalty on the attempt, sending Daphne Corboz to take the penalty shot for the Hoyas. Corboz's shot found the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season as Georgetown tied it 1-1.

Offensive chances opened up more frequently for Georgetown when a long pass from Corboz at midfield found Grace Damaska in the box who then chipped it over Butler goalkeeper Jayne Heinrich for the Hoyas' second goal of the match. Chloe Knott also received an assist on the goal, Damaska's second of the year.

Butler's chances however, were not done yet as Kaylor took a corner kick in the 55th minute with the opportunity to draw the match even once again. Kaylor's corner sailed into the box where it deflected off of several Bulldogs before Muchow was able to direct it into the net to tie the match at 2-2.

Moments later in the 59th minute, Corboz found Damaska in the box yet again for her second goal of the match as the Hoyas went on top 3-2. Damaska completed the hat trick when she headed in a goal from 10 yards out on a free kick taken near midfield by Corboz to give Georgetown a 4-2 advantage, a lead that would hold for the remainder of the match.

"Unfortunately we were not able to maintain that level for the entire game and that's a credit to Georgetown, who is excellent in possession, well coached and have some special players," St. John added.

The Bulldogs continue their east coast road trip with a match at St. John's on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
