Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler volleyball team is arguably the hottest team in the BIG EAST. Their 3-0 win at Seton Hall, the top team in the BIG EAST standings, marks their fifth-straight win against a conference opponent. With the win, Butler improves to 16-7 overall and 8-3 against BIG EAST foes.
Sets one and three were each close with Butler taking 25-23 victories. The second set was all Butler as the Bulldogs dominated from start to finish resulting in a 25-14 win.
"The Dawgs were on fire tonight," Head Coach Sharon Clark explained. "We executed our game plan to perfection."
Butler hit .350 against the Pirates on Saturday night posting attack percentages of .318, .708 and .212. Mary Striedl led all players with an attack percentage of .520. She recorded 13 kills on just 25 swings with zero errors.
"Our hitting was nearly unstoppable in set two thanks to a masterful job by our setter," Clark added. Makayla played like a seasoned veteran tonight. It was beautiful to watch."
Makayla Ferguson was in the box score with yet another double-double as the freshman posted 41 assists and 11 digs. She was a high impact player as she also added three blocks and three kills.
Belle Obert was the team leader in kills with 14. Obert added nine digs and six blocks. Butler's dig leader was fellow senior Jadyn Yarling who ended the night with 16.
Erica Stahl and Kayla Bivins dominated action at the net combining for 13 blocks. Stahl led all players with eight and Bivins was credited with five.
Butler pulled off the road win without a single service ace. Their ability to block attempts at the net along with the high attack percentage was clearly the difference in the match as Butler totaled 14 team blocks compared to just two from Seton Hall. Stahl, Bivins and the rest of the Bulldogs held SHU to a .193 attack percentage.
Highlighting the evening for Seton Hall was setter Shelbey Manthorpe. She posted a double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs. Her sister, Stacey, was the team leader in kills with 15.
BU got off to a slow start in the opening set as SHU opened up a 6-2 advantage early in the action. Butler would climb back into the set by tying the score at 16-16 and take the lead at 17-16, capping off a 4-0 run. The kill from Striedl that gave BU the lead would force a Pirate timeout. The scoring would stay tight, but the combination of Obert and Striedl proved to be too much as Obert got the Bulldogs to set point and Striedl punched the ticket for the 25-23 win, putting BU out in front.
Set two started out close, but ended as the most lopsided difference of the night. Butler broke a 6-6 tie to open up a 14-7 lead. That advantage would grow to 20-11 after a kill from Obert and this time Stephanie Kranda would come up with the game-winner as her kill off the Ferguson assist iced the 25-14 win to give Butler the 2-0 lead at the break.
Butler kept the momentum rolling in the third as they opened up a 10-5 lead after a kill from Striedl. That cushion would quickly disappear as Seton Hall battled back to a one point deficit at 11-10. Though the Pirates would go on to tie the match at 20-20, they would never be able to take the lead as Butler rattled off four-straight points to reach match point at 24-20. A final kill from Obert would ice the 3-0 victory as the Bulldogs extend their winning streak.
Butler's road trip will continue next weekend with games scheduled against Marquette and DePaul. Each match will begin at 8 p.m.
