Seton Hall Spoils Home Opener for Butler

INDIANAPOLIS – After 14-straight road matches, the Butler volleyball team was finally able to play a home match against BIG EAST foe Seton Hall on Friday night. The Pirates were able stay undefeated in conference action as they recorded a 3-0 sweep over the Bulldogs at Shortridge High School (21-25, 21-25, 22-25).

Belle Obert led the Bulldogs in a losing effort by recording a double-double with a match-high 17 kills to go with 10 digs. Obert was one of four Bulldogs to reach a double figure dig total as Jadyn Yarling once again led the team with 18.

Makayla Ferguson also recorded a double-double for Butler as she recorded 32 assists and 15 digs against the Pirates. Ferguson fed the ball to Obert for most of the night but was also able to find Stephanie Kranda and Erica Stahl for seven kills each. Stahl also led the team with five blocks.

Seton Hall used a total team effort to knock off the Bulldogs in three sets. Three different players reached a double figure kill total with Shelbey Manthorpe setting up the team with 33 assists. Manthorpe played a large role in the win as she also added a match-high 21 digs to notch the double-double performance.

The visitors came out hot to open up a 10-5 lead at the start of the first set. Butler was able to cut the lead to 22-19, but the Pirates wouldn't relinquish the lead resulting in a 25-21 win in the opener.

A slow start to the second set put Butler in a 12-3 hole near the halfway point. The Bulldogs would climb back into the match at 21-19, forcing Seton Hall into a timeout, but the Pirates regained their form to take a 2-0 lead into the break with a yet another 25-21 win.

The third set featured seven ties early on in the action. The Pirates used a 3-0 run to break a 10-10 tie and they were able to hold off the charge for the remainder of the set. Butler knocked on the door multiple times getting within one point at 20-19, 22-21 and 23-22. Amanda Hansen came up with a crucial point with a kill from the middle of the floor to move the match to 24-22 and Shelbey Manthorpe finished the game with a kill pushing the score to 25-22.

Butler will return to action tomorrow with a 6 p.m. match vs. Villanova. Action will once again take place at Shortridge High School with free admission.
