Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The 2014 women's soccer team ended the regular season on a high note Friday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Marquette. With the win, Butler ends the year with a 9-8-2 record which includes a 3-4-2 mark in the BIG EAST.
"It's been an up and down season and, despite a consistent effort, the ball didn't always bounce our way," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John explained. "But… I cannot say enough about the character, resilience and leadership of this group. To come out here on our last game of the season and beat a top class program like Marquette, as a coach, it leaves you feeling very proud."
Stephanie Kaylor and Sophia Maccagnone each scored a goal for the Bulldogs as Butler knocked off the Golden Eagles in the season finale. Kaylor put the 'Dawgs up 1-0 after scoring off a corner kick in the first half. The wind-aided goal went past a group of players and into the far side of the net to open up the scoring.
Action picked up in the 57th minute as Maccagnone was fouled just outside of the box to set up a free kick from 20 yards out. The junior netted her fifth goal of the season as she blasted the ball past multiple defenders to register the unassisted score.
Marquette was able to cut the lead in half less than two minutes later as a hand ball in the box set up Mary Luba for a penalty kick. Luba found the back of the net for the sixth time this season.
Butler had the wind to their backs in the first half which gave Marquette the advantage for the final 45 minutes. Shots were fairly even at 4-3 in the first, but Marquette won the battle in the second half 7-1. Corner kicks and fouls were even between the two clubs, but saves were not as Mackenzie Hopkins outplayed Amanda Engel four saves to zero.
Kaylor, Elise Kotsakis and Caroline Kowal took the field for the last time as a Butler Bulldog. Co-Head Coach Tari St. John reflected on the senior class that also includes Kelly Mahoney who was inactive vs. the Golden Eagles.
"This is a special group of seniors," St. John added. "From day one they have consistently done things the right way in terms of their preparedness away from the field, training habits, work rate, selflessness and leadership through a compassionate and supportive channel for their teammates. They are the ultimate teammates and never even expect to be praised for it – but others notice and follow their lead and that is why this team is such a pleasure to work with… Great people doing things the right way on a daily basis and our seniors have been the pioneers that will leave a lasting legacy as this program continues to make big strides forward."
