Box Score MILWAUKEE – The Butler volleyball team took a 3-0 loss at Marquette on Friday night to end their five-match winning streak. The Bulldogs never got in a groove at the Al McGuire Center as the Golden Eagles recorded the sweep 25-14, 25-19, 25-21.
Marquette did something on Friday night that rarely happens when the Bulldogs take the court, slow down the offensive production of senior outside hitter Belle Obert.
Obert was limited to just five kills, hitting at a .138 clip. She took 29 attempts and only committed one error, but the Golden Eagles defense was up to the challenge to slow down the focal point of the BU attack. Even with Marquette dialing in on Obert, the senior still managed to impact the match with a team-high 16 digs.
With Obert unable to impact the team offensively, Butler looked to Mary Striedl and Stephanie Kranda for points. Striedl just missed a double-double with a team-high eight kills to go with nine digs. Kranda was second on the team with seven kills.
The offensive output was set up by freshman Makayla Ferguson. The reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week was limited to just 26 assists, yet she added seven digs and three blocks. Butler only hit .103 as a team as the team never got in sync as a unit.
"We were out of sync tonight and never really regained our composure in this match," Head Coach Sharon Clark said postgame. "We finally settled down in game three, but it was too late to fully gain momentum."
Lindsey Gosh and Autumn Bailey were the players of the game for Marquette on Halloween night. Gosh posted a team-high 13 kills while Bailey recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs.
The Golden Eagles were able to jump out to a 1-0 lead after a 25-14 win in the opening set. Two service aces and a string of BU attack errors gave Marquette a 17-10 advantage and the Bulldogs would never recover as Erin Lehman ended the set with a kill off the Gabby Benda assist.
Butler got off to a much better start in set two, but a 6-0 run from the Golden Eagles took a Bulldog two-point advantage and erased it as the Golden Eagles grabbed a 14-11 lead. Coach Clark took a timeout to stop the momentum, but BU would never get closer than four points down the stretch as Marquette took the 2-0 lead into the break.
Set three featured more back and forth action between the two quality programs, but yet another Marquette scoring run would tell the story of the match. Marquette used a 4-0 run to open up a 20-15 lead after a kill from Autumn Bailey. Butler would climb back into contention by tying the set at 21-21, but the comeback would fall short as Marquette scored four-straight to earn the sweep.
"Being extremely error prone is so out of character for us," Clark added. "We will need to have a short memory tonight and focus on the match tomorrow against DePaul."
Butler will face DePaul tomorrow night at 8 p.m. The final five matches of the season will be played at Hinkle Fieldhouse with the Bulldogs hosting Georgetown next weekend at 7 p.m.
