Big Second Half Lifts Bulldogs At Stetson

Box Score

DeLAND, FLA. -- Butler redshirt-freshman Sam Schrader wasn't a household name prior to the Bulldogs' game at Stetson on Saturday, Oct. 4.  He may well be now after leading Butler to a 49-41 victory over the Hatters at Spec Martin Stadium.

Schrader, in just his fifth collegiate game, rolled up over 200 total yards and scored four touchdowns to help power the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-1 PFL) past a determined and resilient Stetson (2-3, 0-1 PFL) squad.  He scored Butler's first two touchdowns in the game and then added two more in the second half, including a clinching score with under two minutes remaining.

The Butler tailback scored on a 25-yard pass from quarterback Matt Shiltz in the first quarter and on a 57-yard run in the second quarter to give Butler an early 14-7 advantage.  But the Hatters responded with two touchdowns in the final ten minutes of the second quarter to grab a 20-14 halftime lead.

Butler regained the lead early in the third period.  After taking the second half kickoff, the Bulldogs marched 61 yards in five plays with Shiltz hitting tailback Rico Watson with a 19-yard scoring strike to finish the drive.  Five minutes later, Shiltz found wide receiver Derek O'Connor with a three-yard touchdown pass to increase Butler's lead to 28-20.

The Hatters briefly tied the game at 28-28 with 4:49 left in the third period, but Schrader put Butler back on top with an 83-yard touchdown run on the first play following Stetson's kickoff.  Shiltz then made it 42-28 with an 18-yard touchdown run with 10:42 left in the game, and the Bulldogs appeared to be in control,

But the Hatters weren't done.  Stetson quarterback Ryan Tentler hit Kegan Moore with a 55-yard touchdown pass to cut the margin to seven points with almost nine minutes remaining, and the Hatters' defense came up with a turnover to set up another opportunity.

Butler's defense held on back-to-back Stetson drives, before Schrader scored his fourth touchdown on a 26-yard run with 1:53 left.  Stetson did find the end zone one more time with 40 seconds remaining, but the Bulldogs ran out the clock on their final possession.

Schrader finished with a career-high 193 rushing yards on nine carries, and he added 40 receiving yards on a pair of catches.  The 193 rushing yards were the most by a Butler player since Sept. 28, 2013, when Trae Heeter rushed for 227 yards against Jacksonville.

Shiltz completed 13 of 28 passes with one interception for 194 yards and three touchdowns.  O'Connor topped Butler's receiving corps with five catches for 51 yards.

Linebacker Jordan Massey led Butler's defensive unit with 10 tackles, while linebacker David Starkey added eight tackles and one pass interception.  Safety David Burke also picked off one pass, while defensive end Bret Shannon and defensive back Justin Crull each came up with a fumble recovery.  Butler won the turnover battle with the Hatters, 4-1.

Tentler threw for 328 yards and five touchdowns, while running back Cole Mazza picked up 129 rushing yards on 22 carries to pace the Hatters.

Butler will continue its PFL road stretch with a game at Campbell on Saturday, Oct. 11.
