Bulldogs Take Overtime Loss at St. John's

Box Score

QUEENS, N.Y. – A quick strike less than a minute into the overtime period gave St. John's a 2-1 victory over Butler on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs are now 7-7 on the year with a 1-3 mark in the BIG EAST conference.

Butler scored the first goal of the match (22:11), but that lead didn't last long as the Red Storm knotted the scoreboard just four minutes later with a penalty kick score (26:09). Elise Kotsakis scored an unassisted goal to give the Bulldogs an early advantage. St. John's was able to earn their third conference match of the year after a two-goal performance from Rachel Daly.

Daly knotted with action with a penalty kick to record her sixth goal of the season. Her seventh came off a double assist from Emily Cubbage and Mikaila Martinov. The game-winning goal was played to Daly in the middle of the field. She was able to beat the keeper to the right side to end the match.

"The slimmest of margins separated the two teams today," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John said. "Both teams battled and created chances. In the end, St. John's found the difference and they deserved the win."

The box score was even in nearly every category with each team taking nine shots and each goalkeeper making two saves. St. John's took five corner kicks compared to four for BU. St. John's also recorded four more fouls than the Bulldogs.

Kotsakis took three total shots on the day with her lone shot on goal resulting in her eighth goal scored of the season. Sophia Maccagnone led the team with four shots. The only other Bulldogs to penetrate the STJ defense were McKenzie Muchow and Maria Collica who each took one shot.

Sunday's overtime setback at St. John's was the first overtime loss the program has taken since the 2011 season. That year Butler took a 2-1 loss vs. Oregon State on Aug. 28.

The team will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 12 with a road match at Providence.
