Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler volleyball team chalked up another BIG EAST victory on Wednesday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep over DePaul at the Health and Recreation Center (25-14, 25-21, 25-20). Winners of two-straight, Butler now heads into the weekend with an overall record of 11-6.
Each outside hitter for Butler was on-point against DePaul as the Bulldogs posted a .364 attack percentage against the Blue Demons. The team hit .405 in the first set, .500 in the second and finished with a .211 percentage in the third. DePaul however was held to a .183 attack percentage due to the strong defensive efforts at the net from Erica Stahl and Kayla Bivins.
Stahl led all players with six blocks and Bivins was in a tie for second on the team with three. Joining Bivins with three blocks on the day was Mary Striedl and Belle Obert. Stahl and Bivins ate up the middle of the floor by adding nine and seven kills respectively. Obert was once again the team leader in kills with 16. She took 40 swings and only committed three errors giving her a .325 attack percentage.
Makayla Ferguson was credited with a match-high 40 assists on the day and the tandem of Jadyn Yarling and Brooke Ruffolo led the team with 10 digs each.
Butler served the ball well on Wednesday by collecting five service aces, including back-to-back aces in the final set to ice the win. Yarling and Ruffolo each had two while newcomer Kimberly Martino added one.
The first set was tight until a 10-4 scoring run from Butler moved the advantage to 20-14. A timeout from DePaul quickly stopped the scoring spree, but Ruffolo's serve would once again take Butler to the finish line as she rattled off seven-straight points allowing Butler to end the game on a 15-4 run. Obert had nine of her match-high 16 kills in the opening set to lead Butler.
Set two featured more back-and-forth action early, but a 4-0 Butler run near the end of the set would push them over the top for a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs extended an 18-17 lead to 22-17 in part from kills from Stephanie Kranda and Stahl. Attack errors would hurt the Blue Demons in crunch time and one final kill from Obert would send the teams into the break.
The third and final set was the most competitive of the day as the two teams battled to a score of 22-20 down the stretch. A kill from Bivins would move the serve to Yarling who iced the Blue Demons with back-to-back service aces to win the match 3-0.
Butler will have a quick turnaround as they return to the court this weekend with a pair of road matches against BIG EAST foes. The Bulldogs will face St. John's on Friday, Oct. 10 and end the weekend with a match at Providence on Saturday, Oct. 11. Action against the Red Storm will begin at 7 p.m. while the Friars match will start at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
