Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – In a game that had more than 1,100 yards of offense and more than 100 points scored, Butler held on to defeat visiting Morehead State, 62-52. The offensive shoot-out at the Butler Bowl lifted the Bulldogs to 4-5 on the year and 2-4 in the Pioneer Football League.
The game featured 16 touchdowns, including seven of 50 yards or more! The 114 total points broke the previous Butler combined scoring record set in 2000 when Georgetown defeated the Bulldogs, 57-56.
Redshirt-freshman running back Sam Schrader led the Butler assault with 162 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The Butler scoring leader found the end zone on runs of 21 yards, 55 yards, four yards and 68 yards! Teammates Derek O'Connor and Malcolm Weaver each added a pair of touchdowns, while defensive back David Burke added another.
Despite putting a season-high point total on the scoreboard, the Bulldogs found themselves in a come-from-behind situation against the Eagles. Morehead State (3-6, 2-4 PFL) jumped in front with a touchdown just over three minutes into the game and led 20-7 at the end of the first quarter.
"They played us differently than we saw on tapes, so we had to get into a plan B," said head coach Jeff Voris after the game. "Once we settled in, we started to move the ball and got some defensive stops. We scored in all three phases of the game, and when we do that we're going to have pretty good chance to win."
Butler's first quarter tally came on a defensive touchdown, when safety David Burke picked off a pass at the Morehead State 25-yard line and returned it to the end zone. The tally followed the Eagles' first touchdown and gave Butler a brief 7-6 lead.
"That (touchdown) was big," noted Voris. "It broke their momentum at a time we were still adjusting offensively."
From the second quarter on, the game belonged to the Bulldogs. Sharader scored three of his touchdowns in the second period and Weaver added one to give the Bulldogs a 35-23 halftime lead.
That margin stretched to as much as 62-38 in the final period, before Morehead State scored the final two touchdowns in the last 3:33.
The Bulldogs, led by Schrader, rushed for a season-high 297 yards. Weaver added 84 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 69 yards and 19 yards. The Butler quarterback added 119 passing yards, including an 18-yard touchdown strike to senior Derek O'Connor.
Wide receiver Marquese Martin-Hayes led Butler's receivers with six catches for 34 yards. O'Connor finished with five receptions for 57 yards, and he added three punt returns for 85 yards, including an 80-yard return for a touchdown.
Linebacker Ethan Brunhofer led the Bulldogs' defense with 12 tackles, while safety JoJo Ciancio added 11. The Bulldogs surrendered more than 700 yards in total offense, but the defensive unit came up with three key turnovers to aid the victory.
Butler will play its final 2014 road contest next Saturday, Nov. 8, at Valparaiso, before closing out the season at home against Dayton on Saturday, Nov. 15. The Dayton game will have a special 11 a.m. (ET) start time.
