Box Score LAIE, Hawaii – The Bulldogs took an 81-62 loss to BYU in the opening game of the Tom Westin Invitational on Wednesday afternoon. The setback moves Butler to 0-5 on the year.
A first half scoring drought mixed with a hot start to the second half for the Cougars gave BYU the lopsided victory. Four of BYU's five starters reached double figures against the Bulldogs with Makenzie Morrison leading the way with 16.
Butler's Loryn Goodwin tied Morrison's scoring output with 16 first half points. The red-shirt sophomore was the driving force behind the Butler offense as she shot 7-for-15 against the Cougars. Her playing time was limited in the second half, but the combo guard still posted solid numbers by adding five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 25 minutes.
Sydney Buck and Lexus Murry joined Goodwin in double figures as Buck knocked down two of her four field goals from beyond the arc to net 12 points. Murry used four free throws to post her season-high 10 points.
The game got off to a fast start with each team executing early in the action. Butler took a 15-13 lead after a Goodwin layup, but a nine minute scoring drought allowed BYU to go on a 14-0 run which gave the Cougars a 10 point cushion.
BYU would hit four-straight 3-point field goals to go into the break, giving the team a 41-26 advantage at halftime. They shot 38 percent from behind the arc hitting seven of their 18 attempts in the first 20 minutes of play.
