Bulldogs Sweep Hoyas 3-0 on Friday Night

INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler made themselves feel right at home in Hinkle Fieldhouse Friday night as the Bulldogs defeated Georgetown 3-0 in straight-sets (25-15, 25-21, 25-19). The Bulldogs now sit at 18-8 overall with a record of 10-4 against BIG EAST opponents.

Stephanie Kranda delivered a team-high 12 kills for Butler along with 10 kills each by Belle Obert and Erica Stahl. Obert finished the match with 12 digs to earn the double-double. Makayla Ferguson was a constant presence on the Butler attack, contributing 35 assists in the winning effort. On the defensive side, Jadyn Yarling put up a team-high 19 digs for the Bulldogs in the victory.

The match was dominated by Butler's front line as Erica Stahl and Kayla Bivins combined for 11 blocks in the victory. The Bulldogs held Georgetown to a .074 attack percentage while lighting up the opposition by hitting .322.

Kranda hit .440, recording 12 kills off 25 swings with just one error. Stahl, Mary Striedl and Ferguson also posted attack percentages higher than .300.

Butler started the opening set on a 5-1 to build a comfortable lead. The Hoyas were unable to get anything past the BU front line as the Bulldogs tallied five blocks in the opening set. BU advanced their lead by scoring five-straight points to bring the score to 15-6. The Hoyas were never able to get into a rhythm, resulting in Butler taking the first set 25-15.

Set two featured more of the same action as Butler once again jumped out to a 10-6 lead. This time around however the Hoyas were able to creep back into the set taking eight of the next 10 points to take a 14-12 lead.

After taking advantage of several errors by the Hoyas, Butler regained the lead with a kill by Stephanie Kranda to make it 15-14. Kills by Obert and Stahl would eventually push the Butler lead to set-point at 24-18, but Georgetown would not go easily. Alex Johnson recorded consecutive kills to go along with a Lauren Saar ace to cut the score to 24-21. Butler was able to regroup as Striedl made the set-winning kill to give the Bulldogs the win in the second set 25-21.

The third set was tight from the start with neither team able to take a decisive lead after coming out of the locker room. The lead traded hands between the teams until a trio of kills by Obert gave Butler a 14-13 lead midway through the set.

Kills by Striedl and Kranda, along with a couple of Georgetown miscues gave Butler its largest lead of the set at 18-15. The Hoyas narrowed the score to 18-17 until three-straight kills brought the lead to 21-17. Butler closed on a 9-4 run to win set three 25-19 and secure the win in the match.

Butler will be back at Hinkle Fieldhouse to take on first-place Creighton on Saturday night. The start time is set for 7 p.m.
